The 7 types of rest and why they matter
Rest is so much more than just going to sleep. It includes all the restorative practices that help us regain and maintain energy. In her book "Sacred Rest", Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith shares the 7 types of rest and how we can approach rest and wellbeing more holistically.
1. Physical Rest
This involves both passive rest and active rest. It’s about replenishing the body and addressing physical fatigue.
Ways to practice: Passive rest: Sleeping and napping, active rest: Yoga, stretching, massages
2. Mental Rest
Aimed at overcoming cognitive overload, mental rest requires taking breaks from intense concentration and allowing the mind to unwind.
Ways to practice: Regular mindfullness, breath work, journaling
3. Spiritual Rest
This type of rest is about feeling a sense of belonging, love, acceptance, and purpose.
Ways to practice: Prayer, meditation, religious services, time in nature, fulfilling activities (ex. volunteering)
4. Emotional Rest
This involves the freedom to express feelings and cut back on people-pleasing behaviors.
Ways to practice: Therapy, setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion and avoiding negative self-talk
5. Social Rest
Distinguishing between relationships that revive you and those that exhaust you is key here.
Ways to practice: Prioritize time with people who uplift you, limit time with people who drain your energy
6. Sensory Rest
This involves reducing sensory input from screens, bright lights, background noise, and other stimuli.
Ways to practice: Take regular screen breaks, create a calm environment, spend time in nature
7. Creative Rest
Reigniting the wonder and awe within us. It’s about taking time to appreciate beauty, whether in nature, the arts, or everyday moments.
Ways to practice: Attend shows, consume positive content and allow yourself to dream and brainstorm without pressure to produce, find a passion project
